On March 22, 2006, NALGEP announced the release of a new interactive toolkit, "Revitalizing Southeastern Communities: A Brownfields Toolkit." In partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Region 4 (EPA), this compact disc provides local officials with the information needed to redevelop brownfields and revitalize their communities.
The Toolkit includes information about the state brownfield programs in the Southeast; EPA's brownfield grant program; resources and assistance available from federal and state partners; information on local incentives; and interviews from brownfield stakeholders discussing how reuse is benefiting their communities. The toolkit also includes over 60 case studies of successful brownfields projects from across the Southeast and entire United States that underline the challenges and lessons learned of these localities.
CASE STUDY HIGHLIGHTS:
The City of Clearwater, Florida turned a former gas station and garage into the Greenwood Community Health Resource Center. A partnership between the North Greenwood Neighborhood, State of Florida, and City of Clearwater led to the opening of the Greenwood Health Center that offers immunizations, physicals, tests and screenings, flu shots, and counseling to residents of the neighborhood. The project serves as an example how revitalization of a former brownfields can enhance a community and the quality of life of nearby residents.
In 1990, Louisville, Kentucky placed a high priority on reclaiming the city's waterfront area, which had long been marred by a range of contaminants left behind from more than 150 years of industrial uses. Through public/private partnerships the area is now home to a minor league baseball stadium and a new 55 acre urban park, and future plans call for the development of children's play areas, restaurants and cafes, as well as an amphitheater.
The Toolkit includes information for all levels of expertise, from introductory materials, all the way to advanced reuse strategies for experienced professionals. A video introduction from Jimmy Palmer, EPA Regional Administrator, discusses priorities for EPA's brownfields program. The toolkit can also be utilized to access publications, links to important websites and contacts, strategies for working with multiple stakeholders, and approaches to funding and financing brownfields projects.
