Brownfields Revitalization Air Quality Smart Growth Water Quality Local Innovation
 Air Quality

Across America, communities are seeking to improve air quality as they face the challenges of choking traffic congestion, increased vehicle emissions, longer commute times, and sprawling growth patterns.  New air quality goals will triple the number of communities that are classified as not meet federal air quality standards.

NALGEP is working with local communities to identify some of the more innovative approaches to addressing air quality through new technologies, effective community outreach, smart growth tools, and improved commuter choices.

Local Innovation
  • Los Alamos, New Mexico landfill solar project
A 15-acre array of solar panels will be built next year in Los Alamos, for a project intended to advance ideas on efficiently storing and utilizing solar power in communities. The $27 million "smart grid" system is a collaboration between the county, Los Alamos National Laboratory and a Japanese energy company.
  • The Parking Lot as ‘Solar Grove’
Parking lots are converted into Solar Groves that shade cars, generate renewable energy, and provide clean energy for electric car charging stations.
  • Wind farm 'mega-project' underway in Mojave Desert
The Alta Wind Energy Center — with plans for thousands of acres of turbines to generate electricity for 600,000 Southern California homes — officially breaks ground Tuesday July 27, 2010.
