Community Revitalization Research Initiative
The Community Revitalization Research Initiative project was awarded by the U.S. EPA in August 2002. Under this cooperative agreement NALGEP conducted and disseminated research aimed toward promoting new approaches to clean up and redevelop contaminated sites.

Research Objectives:

  • Institutionalize land revitalization, by integrating the cleanup mission with community redevelopment;
  • Determine how local communities in need of site cleanup and reuse can effectively participate in EPA's community revitalization initiative and take advantage of opportunities presented by the brownfields law;
  • Educating key stakeholders about the opportunities for revitalization, by showcasing examples of successful community revitalization projects and programs and informing them about the tools and resources available to redevelop contaminated sites;
  • Demonstrating the potential to leverage public and private sector funding for site revitalization;
  • Identifying regulatory and policy barriers to site revitalization and developing strategies to overcome the barriers; and
  • Educating elected officials, business leaders, community groups, journalists, other opinion leaders, and the general public regarding our research results on the many benefits of contaminated site revitalization, including promoting public health and environmental improvement.

    Project Objectives:

  • Convene and lead expert Advisory Committee of leading local government brownfield leaders and other stakeholders who will work together on an ongoing basis to identify barriers and determine strategies to overcome barriers;
  • Conduct research and analysis on the various policy, regulatory, and institutional barriers to community revitalization through reclaiming contaminated properties;
  • Collect information on barriers and strategies for overcoming the barriers at the various community revitalization roundtables to be conducted across the country;
  • After each roundtable, NALGEP will provide research findings on the key issues, needs, and opportunities for local communities identified at that Roundtable;
  • Publish a final report summarizing lessons learned from the roundtables, including a description of barriers to revitalization and identification of approaches to overcome these obstacles; and
  • Conduct one or more briefings of key public officials to present the results of our research and analysis on overcoming the barriers to the revitalization of contaminated properties.

    Project Activities:

  • In 2003, NALGEP formed an Advisory Committee to help lead the Brownfield revitalization projects.
  • NALGEP used the conducted Roundtables as a way to research barriers to community revitalization;
  • In 2004, NALGEP published the Unlocking Brownfields: Keys to Community Revitalization report. This report was the culmination of NALGEP's research and findings on brownfield and community redevelopment over eight years. To learn more click here to access the report.
