Community Development Block Grants & Brownfields
NALGEP launched the CDBG-Brownfields project, funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Office of Policy Development and Research. The project convened local government officials to provide input to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development as the Department considers modifying the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) regulations to clarify that CDBG funds can be used for brownfields redevelopment.
Project Objectives:
- Evaluate the impact of current CDBG regulations on brownfields redevelopment;
- Determine whether modifying the CDBG regulations would help to facilitate the use of CDBG funds for brownfields revitalization; and
- Make specific recommendations for modifying the CDBG regulations to make them more responsive to the needs of local CDBG grant recipients conducting brownfields activities.
Project Activities:
- Created a CDBG Brownfields Task Force, comprised of local government environmental and economic development officials, to guide and oversee the project;
- Produced the report HUD-CDBG Brownfields Funding: A Building Block for Community Development; and
- Organized a Washington, DC meeting for local officials to Communicate project results to key federal officials.
Project Status: Completed
